It's a delight to choose gifts for babies and toddlers. If you are close and see them often, you will know the best choices to make. If you see them less, it's a good idea to ask their mom what they would like best. Here are a couple of ideas:
Caldecotte Medal books. The Caldecotte Medal is awarded each year to one picture book for children by the Association of Library Service to Children (ALSC). The book then carries the gold Cadecotte seal on the cover. You can find a list of these books since the first award in 1939 at the ALSC website.
Textures. Little children love to feel textures. Soft and fuzzy stuffed animals, a blanket with a satin border, or a smooth and polished stone or piece of wood. These gifts need to be larger than the child's mouth, though. He will surely want to taste it too.
Shapes and sizes. Toddlers love to explore shapes and sizes and how things fit together. There are a number of wonderful toys on the market that involve fitting shapes through holes, fitting shapes together, and organizing patterns.
Color. One of the important thing for small children to learn is how to distinguish one color from another. A great game to play with a little one is to ask him to fetch all of his "red" toys for you to see. Then ask for a different color.
Sometimes toddler gifts are really gifts for the whole family. Products to keep the child safe, extra linens, or a few hours of a Nanny's time can help create a sense of peace and security.
Of course the greatest gift is your time and love. Walk with her, play with her, read to her, teach her. Your rewards will be immense.
